About the Witch Hat Pattern

The Spellbound Witch Hat Sewing pattern is a pattern for a quilted, lined, wearable Witch's Hat with an optional sash.  

The Spellbound Witch's Hat pattern features three different versions (all included with the pattern):

  1. Patchwork Quilted Hat
  2. Quilted Hat
  3. Non-Quilted, Non Patchwork Hat

 

Suitable for light and medium-weight cotton and cotton blend fabrics. Not suitable for stretch fabrics. Quilting-weight cotton is recommended.

 

Size: The finished hat is approximately 16” tall by 20” wide. The interior circle has a 22-23” inch circumference.   It fits “most” adults and includes instructions to slightly size the hat for a smaller circumference head. This hat is not intended for children. 

 

Skill Level:  Advanced Beginner to Intermediate

  • 2 Fat Quarters for Binding
  • 1 Fat Quarter for Optional Sash

I made the hat with some of my wilder handwoven fabric. I only needed to make it a little bit bigger because my head is bigger than average and also due to the thickness of the fabric. I didn’t use the iron on interfacing because it wasn’t friendly with some of the synthetics in the handwoven. Basically I read through your directions a couple of times and used good methods for sewing handwoven fabric that raveled easily. I used stay stitching a couple of times on each cut edge. The fringe was the warp in the weave. I cut the cone to accommodate keeping the fringe. I’ve had numerous compliments including a lady who stopped her car to talk about my wonderful hat. Your pattern is well written and along with my skills I was able to pull this off. Thank you.

I think this is a great pair. I’ve made it several times. The instructions are clear. The only thing I did the last time, I cut the binding for the inside rim on the inside 2” your on the diet so I had more room to fold it over and sit down. Thought I was fighting too much to turn it over and stitch down. I love this pattern

I adapted my handwoven fabric to your pattern. I made it a little bigger due to the heavier weight of the handwoven. I did a lot of stay stitching to prevent the fabric from unraveling. I literally cut the pattern pieces and immediately stay stitches. I practiced iron on but that didn’t work. I shared this with my Weavers and Soinners Guild. This morning on my way to the park a lady stopped her car and told me she loved it. My sister goes through breast cancer surgery on the 23rd. I was thinking of that when I made this.

As always Melissa’s pattern was well-written with great pictures and video assist. I used fabric from my stash, heavy free-motion quilting and a little bow. I wanted the point to fold over a bit and a few hand stitches accomplished that. I appreciated the templates and suggestions on how to get a good fit! I love how my hat turned out!

My daughter asked me to make them a witch hat. After finding your pattern and helpful video, I made the hat with the blocks. Then I made the orange one and the purple one. My daughter has a cat. I used your measurement ratio and adjusted the size for the cat. I used batting and not the foam so the hats have movement like fabric. It was a fun project. Thank you.
